AI is especially useful where the possibility space is too large for people to search directly. It can identify patterns across large collections of measurements, propose candidate molecules, accelerate parts of simulation and analysis, and help researchers decide which experiments deserve scarce time and resources. These systems generate hypotheses and predictions; experimental evidence remains necessary.
Google DeepMind reports that AlphaFold has predicted more than 200 million protein structures and that its resources have more than three million users across more than 190 countries. Those are provider-reported usage figures, not a count of completed discoveries. AlphaFold does not replace laboratory science; it provides structural predictions and confidence information that can help scientists choose better questions and experiments.
Health and human capability
AI can assist with medical images, clinical documentation, risk detection, public-health analysis, drug discovery, and personalized support. The greatest value may come from collaboration: machines offering speed and pattern recognition while clinicians provide context, ethics, communication, and accountability.
WHO emphasizes that benefits depend on governance. A system that performs well in a study may fail across hospitals, populations, languages, or equipment. Safe health AI requires representative evidence, privacy protection, clinician involvement, continuous monitoring, and a clear route for patients to question decisions.
Education and accessibility
Used well, AI can provide individualized explanations, immediate practice, translation, reading support, and alternative formats for people with disabilities. It can help teachers prepare materials and identify where students need support. It can widen access to expertise for people far from institutions.
The danger is turning assistance into dependency or replacing human relationships with automated output. Schools need AI literacy, assessment redesign, privacy standards, and equitable access. Students should learn to challenge a model, trace evidence, and produce original judgment—not merely accept generated answers.
Climate, energy, and resilience
AI can improve parts of weather forecasting, grid management, materials discovery, industrial efficiency, and disaster preparation. Better forecasts and optimization may help communities allocate resources and reduce waste, but realized benefits depend on deployment, infrastructure, policy, and rebound effects. AI is a tool for climate work, not a substitute for emissions policy.
The International Energy Agency estimates that data centers used about 415 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2024, around 1.5% of global electricity consumption. Its 2025 base-case forecast reaches about 945 terawatt-hours in 2030. That is a scenario with substantial uncertainty, not a guaranteed outcome. Efficiency, cleaner power, transparent measurement, and careful workload choices are part of responsible innovation.
Work as augmentation
AI can reduce some repetitive tasks, help people communicate across languages, give small organizations new analytical capacity, and make sophisticated tools easier to use. The International Labour Organization and Poland’s NASK estimated in 2025 that one in four jobs worldwide had some potential exposure to generative AI. Exposure means tasks within an occupation may be affected; it does not mean one in four jobs will disappear.
The ILO study concluded that transformation is more likely than complete replacement, while emphasizing that outcomes vary by occupation, country, infrastructure, skills, and policy. Training, worker participation, job redesign, social protection, and sharing productivity gains can influence whether exposure becomes augmentation or displacement. No single worldwide employment outcome is predetermined.
A larger canvas for human creativity
Generative tools can accelerate exploration in writing, design, music, film, software, and interactive media. They allow people to test more possibilities and lower technical barriers between an idea and a prototype.
Creative benefit requires consent, attribution, compensation, and space for human culture. The purpose should not be to flood the world with synthetic volume. It should be to expand who can create, support difficult craft, and free people to spend more time on meaning, taste, relationships, and original direction.
